Carnac is located on the northern edge of Mor braz, on the Atlantic coast, between theGulf of Morbihanto the east and theQuiberon peninsulato the west. It is a very large coastal town that offers a protected stretch of water for most of itsfine sandy beaches.

In 1974, a thalassotherapy center was built on part of the dried-up salt marshes. A few salt marshes remain, but they are no longer in use. Opposite them, the Barrière de Carnac casino was built.

  • ** The history of Carnac: From prehistoric life to a seaside resort

Carnac has probably been occupied continuously since the fifth millennium BC, when the Saint Michel tumulus was built (in the Neolithic period). At its base, it is 125 meters long, 60 meters wide, and 12 meters high. It required 35,000 cubic meters of stone and earth to build. It is a tomb for members of the elite and contained various funerary objects, most of which are now on display at the Museum of Prehistory. The chapel was then built on top of it.

The alignments are divided into several distinct groups. The Ménec alignments consist of 12 converging rows of standing stones stretching over more than a kilometer, with the remains of stone circles at each end. The largest stones, to the west, are up to 4 m high.

Legend has it that Saint Cornelius, pursued by Roman soldiers, turned around and turned them into stones, known today as menhirs.

Around 1875, Scottish archaeologist James Miln (1819-1881) came to study the site and hired Zacharie Le Rouzic (1864-1939) as his guide and assistant. After the death of his mentor, Le Rouzic became the custodian and then curator of the Museum of Prehistory and, although self-taught, he became an internationally recognized specialist in the region's megaliths.

In 1903, a seaside resort was created on former salt marshes. It developed significantly in the 1950s, turning Carnac into a two-part town: Carnac-ville and Carnac-Plage.
