🎨 Artistic Legacy – Claude Monet & Les Aiguilles de Port Coton

The Transforming Arrival by Claude Monet (1886)

In September 1886, the Impressionist painter Claude Monet arrived in Belle-Île, initially planning to stay for just two weeks. Fascinated by the wild beauty of the landscapes, he ended up staying for two full months, until the end of November.

Monet stays at the Maart inn in Kervilahouen where, according to his own words, he " has a devil of a time sleeping because of the rats above the bed and a pig below it "!

The Needles of Port Coton – An Impressionist Masterpiece

"I am in a superb country of wild beauty, a jumble of formidable rocks and an incredible sea of colors," wrote Monet upon discovering Port Coton.

Port Coton is his favorite subject:

  • 39 paintings created during his stay, all inspired by the wild coast

  • 3 prime locations: Port Coton (pyramids & Lion Rock), Port Domois, Port de Goulphar

  • Revolutionary technique: Working in series to capture changing light

The Pyramids of Port Coton – Name & Inspiration

Les Aiguilles (also known as Les Pyramides) owe their name tothe whipped foam that forms fluffy flakes resembling cotton in rough weather.

Monet painted these rocks with very little sky, seeking to express the power, even the wildness, of the landscape. He worked in the same places in all weathers, braving the wind and strong equinoctial tides.

Major Works

Monet created at least six major versions of the Pyramids/Needles:

  • "The Pyramids of Port-Coton, Wild Sea" (1886) - Pushkin Museum, Moscow

  • "Pyramids of Port-Coton" - Museum of Contemporary Art, Caracas

  • "Rocks at Belle-Île" - Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen

  • "The Pyramids at Port-Coton, Rainy Weather" - Arp Museum, Rolandseck

  • "The Pyramids of Port-Coton, Sun Effect" - Private collection

  • "Rocks at Belle-Île" - Private collection

Other Inspired Artists

After Monet, Henri Matisse and John Peter Russell (an American painter and friend of Monet) also fell under the artistic spell of Belle-Île. Russell in particular helped Monet carry his equipment along the steep paths during his stay.
